Street network and home-based business patterns in Cairo’s informal areas

Identifying the economic potential of informal urban areas is a topic increasing interest for policymakers and practitioners in less developed countries, yet little known how street design influences type count business opportunities. By adapting space syntax framework, this study aims to quantitatively verify association between Cairo patterns home-based businesses where small prevalence high. This paper contributes literature by developing methodology which fit testing hypotheses, allows control influence unobserved factors, extracts spatial rules, trends or logics patterns. The results show that accessibility an important factor encouraging (or discouraging) settlement businesses. Home-based are spatially distributed along local primary streets, provide flows customers. Our findings contribute better knowledge base understanding different types activities properties built environment relate each other, may impact on emergence micro-enterprises, what kind suit isolated laneways, can be anticipated managed, land use regulations improved.
